In 1939, Philadelphia's Gum, Inc. tried to establish itself in the fledgling baseball-card marketplace by issuing a black-and-white 'Play Ball' set. Issues in three series, these cards were the only true national competition to the Goudey name in the late '30s, though like Goudey, the Play Ball line would ultimately fall to the same uncontrollable fate -- the outbreak of World War II.
